Focallocal: 3rd Free Hugs!
PLACE: Trafalgar Square
TIME: 2nd February 2013 at 2:00pm

Free things. Everyone loves free things! In today’s society especially, our eyes are immediately drawn to that word. Maybe we can save some money. Maybe we can get a meal. What can we get for free. We always want to get something. How often do we think of GIVING something for free?

”Free Hugs” is about giving. Our intentions is to encourage people to think and talk about the reasons why we hug, discover if hugging brings any benefits to us and spread some smiles to make London feel like a warmer, more welcoming place.

Omar Hug

It’s the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We’re always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something
– from the movie “Crash”

One of our members, Omar set this event into motion with Focallocal inspired by Juan Mann and his inspirational campaign of free hugs. Omar says:

” I’ve always wanted to do that when I was in my home country (Morocco) but I didn’t got the chance to do it there. Once in London, I’ve been to Free Hugs with couchsurfers and I enjoyed it very much so that I asked to do it another time with Focallocal’s activities, it was a great success and now it’s a monthly event!”

By making Free Hugs a consistent monthly event, we hope to plant a seed of compassion and acceptance in peoples heart and thoughts when they view the busy world around them. We don’t need to hug everyone, but we need to look at people in such a way that makes them feel acknowledged. That person standing beside you while you wait for the bus is a fellow human who has dreams, hopes, and fears just like you.

Another on of our members Mariana, summarises her views in a truly beautiful way:

“Embraced by the rhythm of a fast paced city, we sometimes forget to embrace each other. By releasing hormones that trigger for trust, bonding and compassion, hugs express recognition of the other, and nurture a sense of belonging, strength and security, relieving stress, increasing self-worth and your immune system! Hugs make you feel good! Let’s embrace our profound physical and emotional needs for touch. Let’s HUG.”

Can you remember one really great hug you’ve had? how did it make you feel ..and why? why does a good genuine hug make us feel so much better? what are the benefits of hugging others more often?

Warm wishes,
Andy at Focallocal
